The August Smart Lock is a retrofit deadbolt. If you are a renter or you’re just looking for the convenience and want it to be as little trouble to install as possible then this might be for you.
This particular retrofit deadbolt only replaces the interior of your existing deadbolt. The exterior part of the deadbolt remains allowing the key to still be used. Which is useful if you forget to or don’t get a chance to change out the batteries.
Remember, this is an add-on to your existing deadbolt, so if there is something wrong with the existing deadbolt, like the latch is sticking or key is difficult to turn, this won’t fix that problem. If that is the case, you are better off getting a new deadbolt and checking the fit of the door.
Ideal for renters
Landlords don’t usually like tenants changing out the locks without getting permission from them in writing. They want to be able to enter the residence at any time even if you aren’t there.
But because this lock does not change the existing deadbolt this might be a good choice for renters who want the convenience of a smart lock. The landlord can still get in with their key and also allow you to operate the lock with your smartphone.
Will my lock work with the August Smart Lock?
The August Smart Lock device is almost 5” tall. This smart lock will not work on rim locks, mortise, interconnected or euro cylinder locks.
This lock comes with an adapter kit to allow installations with most brands of deadbolts. Which means this smart lock will work with the majority of the traditional deadbolts in the United States and Canada.
Operation and controls
This lock is operated locally with BlueTooth through the August app on your smartphone. You can lock, unlock, check history logs and check the status of the lock all from the comfort of your bed with the August app.
The BlueTooth operation through the app will automatically unlock your door as you approach. This turns out to be a very convenient feature if your hands are full with groceries or children.
You can issue unlimited digital keys to family, friends and any others that you’re expecting. And when they’re used they will show up on the history logs as well.
Guests cannot change any settings for the lock or give out codes or access to others. But you, as the owner, can change guests to owners and then they’ll be able to give access to whoever they want. So be careful who you give owner control to.
The Digital Keys
The digital keys can be set up as either permanent, temporary or scheduled.
Those with permanent access can be family members or friends who you don’t mind coming in at any time.
Temporary access is for those who visit for short periods of time, like in-laws that are in town for a few days. Or maybe a house sitter that will only be there while you’re out of town.
Scheduled access is for those that you might only want to be able to enter at a specified time and restricted from any other. This would be like a dog walker or cleaning service.
Comes with DoorSense
DoorSense is August’s name for the door sensor that comes included in the box. It comes in 2 pieces, one attached to the door and the other attached to the door frame. This sensor tells the August Smart Lock if the door is shut.
See, the smart locks that have an autolock sensor will extend the bolt after a certain period of time, usually 30 seconds. If the door is shut great, the door is locked.
What if you have kids like mine that “think” the door is shut and it’s really not? The bolt will still extend whether the door is completely shut or not.
But August’s door sensor will check if the 2 sensors are in alignment and if not will alert you with a notification. And won’t extend the bolt.
August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge
The August Smart Lock can be used remotely but you need the Connect WiFi Bridge. It costs about $63 which is less than the Hub for Kwikset Kevo Convert. This allows remote access to the lock, add or remove codes and check lock status or what code was used last.
There is also an optional keypad for the outside of the house. It allows a guest or even yourself to use a pin code instead of the BlueTooth on the smartphone if by some strange chance you don’t have your phone.
Codes can be assigned by the owner through the app.
