You’re replacing your deadbolt but aren’t sure which one to get? You want it to be a good deadbolt but you also don’t want to pay too much. You could get a high security residential deadbolt but the better ones are all over $100. This is a list of the best door deadbolts that are under $40.

This list is in order from best to worst. All are under $40 and each of them will fit in your existing deadbolt’s cutout. These are not based on cost. Generally the list is from Grade 1 to Grade 3. And that is not a mistake. Grade 1 is the most secure, can take more abuse, can withstand elements better, and are harder to pick and bump than a Grade 3.

Single cylinder deadbolts are shown for this list but the double cylinder models would rank the same. Double cylinder deadbolts do not have the thumbturn on the inside, both sides of the lock are keyed. Typically,w a double cylinder deadbolt is used where an intruder could break a window or reach through a pet access door to turn the thumbturn to gain access.

This is not a comprehensive list of every deadbolt that is manufactured. The big box hardware stores have their own brand of deadbolts that aren’t shown here – Defiant from Home Depot and Gatehouse from Lowe’s –  that would compare to the Design House deadbolt. There are other lesser known brands that would compare to Design House as well – Delaney, Pamex, BHP, etc.

Generally these types of deadbolt locks are $10 and under, however they are also pretty generic deadbolts with nothing fancy about them. They have a standard keyway which are the easiest to pick. The bolt is only 5/8″ long so not as much of the bolt is in the frame. And some have internal plastic parts. I would not recommend these types of locks for doors where you need security such as a front or back door. They would be more appropriate on an internal office or storage door.

But if you’re looking to get the best lock for the lowest price it would be the Schlage B60. Usually they run about $30-$40, Grade 1, no plastic parts, and their customer service is pretty good as well. If you’re looking for even higher security check out my post about high security deadbolts.

This was a great rundown on the options for the best deadbolts when you are on a budget but do not want to compromise on getting security for your money. The Schlage B60s is what we have in our villa, and they work well. We paid the equivalent of $50 per deadbolt here in Dubai (not surprising, I see this kind of upcharge on many things here).

Having these more secure deadbolts for at least the main entranceways just makes sense. I learned that long ago when I had break-ins two years in a row. I bought new and more secure locks and deadbolts throughout the house after the second one and we have not had a problem since.

Staying away from plastic and overly cheap deadbolts may cost a bit more initially, but the money and trouble you save long-term make that extra money spent on a decent deadbolt well worth it. The minimum I would ever go with is the Class 1 deadbolts, and the ones you have listed will work.

You mentioned there are some other brand name options out there, i.e. Home Depot. Do they offer Commercial Grade Class 1 locks at all or do they stick to the cheaper (and easier to break into) Class 3 options? I think I will stick with the brand I know and trust in any case (Schlage).

Defiant does not have grade 1 or grade 2 locks. It’s like any other store’s brand, a cheaper, lower quality alternative. They’re fine for interior doors like a bathroom, bedroom or closet but not something I would choose for a front door.

Wow, your article was so informative! You really have a lot of knowledge about deadbolts and different types and advantages. I actually really like the Baldwin 380 and will probably end up purchasing that one for my needs. Thanks again for a great article, this really helped me make my decision!

I checked them one by one on Youtube, and I can say most of them have related tutorials on how to install them by yourself, except for Baldwin 360. This is very important as there is no problem if you are installing your deadbolt with a technician, but if you will do it alone? Then that’s where the problem will surface. I know it, I experienced it. So before anything else, copy the model number, paste it on Youtube, to see if there are tutorials available for that specific deadbolt model.

Can you tell me what was difficult about the installation that you needed a technician? Generally, these deadbolts are very simple to install and shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to get done. Typically these youtube installation videos are provided to be used instead of the paper installation instructions and not due to difficulty of installation.
