The Ring name is synonymous with doorbell video cameras. And for good reason. Ring was started in 2012 and since then have grown to be the most widely known manufacturer of doorbell cameras. In addition, they also have come out with their own brand of floodlight cams, home alarm security kits, and peephole cameras. Ring’s Video Doorbell 2 is wireless and one of the top rated doorbell cameras.

This is Ring’s improvement to their first Video Doorbell. It went from 720p HD to 1080p HD video. And the battery has become more accessible and it is removable without the need to take the doorbell from the wall. It comes with 2 covers,  silver or black, to match to your existing door hardware or home’s décor.

Operations

Operating and adjusting the settings of the Doorbell camera will use the same app as any other Ring device you might own. When opening the app you will see the Doorbell 2 listed, click on it and the settings and status will show. From here you can monitor battery level, view event history, strength of WiFi signal and see a live view through the camera.

From the app you can adjust motion sensor settings. This part of the app you might be adjusting more than any other to get it correct. This is because with the app you can adjust sensitivity of the motion sensor and also control what zones in front of the doorbell camera to monitor.

You might not want the camera to alert you whenever someone and their dog walk on the sidewalk in front of your house but if they get 5 feet closer to your house you will want to be alerted. With the app you can set the locations for it to focus on. The camera doesn’t start recording until motion is sensed or the button is pressed. And this camera does not have the recording before a triggering event feature like the August Doorbell Cam Pro.

You can also designate someone through the app to share access with. This will send them notifications as well as let them see videos but they will not be able to delete or change any information.

Viewing the Video

You can access the doorbell’s video and sound through the app. When the motion sensor or the doorbell is pressed you get an alert on your phone and can accept or deny the notification and if you accept it will start a two way conversation.

Best rated doorbell camera

When there is an event in the past that you want to review you can access the video remotely with Ring Protect Plus. When you purchase the doorbell it comes with a 30-day free subscription of Ring Protect Plus. Ring Protect Plus lets you store, view and share all videos from this or other Ring cameras and doorbells. Ring Protect Plus also includes 24/7 Ring Alarm monitoring. After the first 30 days you will have to purchase it and it costs $10 a month.

If you’re just getting the one doorbell camera, the Ring Protect Basic only costs $3 a month. With that you can record and share video but only from one device.

Installation

Unlike most doorbells you can choose whether it can be wired or wireless. However, most people choose this doorbell camera because of the convenience of wireless installation. This makes installation much easier than with a wired connection. The doorbell comes with everything needed for installation. It includes different size anchors and screws for different types of applications. It also includes the drill bit and screwdriver.

They also have included two wedge mounting plates which will let you adjust the camera to the best angle to capture the area in front of the door. It includes a USB cable for recharging the battery. You can get a 2nd battery from Amazon to act as a backup when the other one is recharging.

The battery is accessible from the front so that the battery can be easily removed and recharged without removing the doorbell from the mount. Which is helpful because you can buy an additional battery and plug that in while the other is charging. The battery takes about 5 hours to charge but lasts about 6 months under normal use.

Be aware of the background and angle of sun or lights when installing this camera. Images will be difficult to see if light is directly in front of the lens. Use the wedges to adjust angle and get a clear picture of the front of the door but away from sources of light.

At 2.5” wide X 5” tall it’s slightly bigger than the previous version. While it might overhang most door frame trim, it’s not big enough to be out of place on the wall next to the door.

The screwdriver that comes in the box is specifically for the screws that attach the doorbell to the mounting plate. This is to prevent just anyone walking up with a Philips or flathead screwdriver and removing your doorbell camera. However, in the event that someone rips it from the mount Ring will replace it free of charge.

Ring’s Neighbors App

Ring has also released a community app that works with the Ring Video Doorbell. It is called “Neighbors by Ring”, and can be found on iTunes and Google Play, it is free and you don’t need to have Ring to use it.

It will let you post videos, pictures and comments to the app and only those in your community can access them. This is done by determining your location and setting access to a perimeter that you define. But your privacy is kept and even neighbors won’t know who you are, the app identifies everyone as neighborX with the “X” being a number.

Ring Neighbors app on iTunes and Google Play.

It is a very useful app. Recently my area was flooded and there were pictures with warnings of flooded streets and of streets that weren’t flooded. People post images of stray dogs that might have escaped someone’s fence. Or posts a video of when a stranger comes to their door.

In some cases videos have been posted on the Neighbors app after houses have been broken into asking if anyone recognizes the person or vehicle leaving the house. So it is a helpful app for you and your neighbors to communicate and be made aware of any topics or safety issues in your area. I would recommend using it even if you do not have a Ring Doorbell.

My Conclusion

Ring’s Video Doorbell 2 is a good doorbell camera, particularly if you don’t want to mess with wiring directly to a power source.  It supports integration with Alexa voice commands. Motion sensor can be a bit on the lacking side as it does not show or record the few seconds before motion or doorbell press. The Ring Protect Basic plan is pretty reasonable at $3 a month.

The Ring Video Doorbell 2 as well as the other Ring doorbell products integrate seamlessly with Ring’s other home safety and security products. This doorbell is something that should be highly considered if you have plans to add Ring’s home alarm security kit in the future. When you’re looking for a doorbell camera this is definitely one you should put as your top 2 or 3 choice.

Hi, Bill and thanks for this review.

This is a great idea when you consider how many packages are being ripped off from peoples front doors these days.  And, in spite of the cost, I think it should be a must-have piece of security for most homes.

A couple of things I like about it are the improvement in picture quality and the ease of installation.  For me, I think I would like the wired in model.  My only question would be… Could you use existing wiring from an old doorbell or would some re-wiring be necessary?

Another thing I like is being able to adjust the sensitivity.  Do you have any idea as to how long the delay factor is from time of detection to the actual recording of images?

It would seem to me that the further away you could get the sensitivity (without catching the neighbor and their dog), would be better and allow time for the video to kick in before someone gets to the front door.  Of course, this probably would only work well if one had a long entrance from the sidewalk.

And one more thing.  I noticed on the website that this product only ships on “continental US”.  Does that mean that it does NOT ship to Canada?

In spite of the video delay, I still think I will look into this, or something like it, further.

Thanks again,

Wayne

Hi Wayne, thanks for the questions.

You can use the existing doorbell wires, as long as they’re still in good shape of course.

There is not an actual “delay”, it just doesn’t start recording until the motion sensor is activated or the doorbell is pressed. The August Doorbell Cam Pro and the Ring Doorbell Pro both have pre-buffered recording. Which means that the doorbells are always recording but not saving so that when the motion sensor is activated or the doorbell is pressed it will cave the recording. The Ring Doorbell Camera 2 does not have that feature.

As tor the continental US thing, you might have been on the US Amazon page. If you’re shopping from Canada you can find the Ring Doorbell here

    I hope that helps!

This is a very informative article, thank you! I do not have a ring doorbell camera, but our neighbor does. When a woman parked her car in our cul de sac last week, leaving the engine running and sat there for 3-1/2 hours, we figured she was “casing the joint.” Our street is on a common messaging thread so all concerned started texting each other. This particular neighbor was not at home but with his ring camera was able to visualize the woman’s license plate and share the number with all of us. I was pretty impressed!

I will be sure to share this article with my husband and wouldn’t be surprised if a ring doorbell is in our home’s future!

Police use the information gained from doorbell cameras all the time when there is a break-in or something suspicious like that parked car. In fact in that Neighbors app I mentioned when you post a picture or video of illegal activity the people at the Neighbors app chime in and request you send the video to the police.
